Losing Control?

Michael Beck

“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you.” (John 14:27)

We can’t lose something we never had. There is no such thing as “losing control” of the world around us. In each and every day, events are taking place that are contrary to our will. We want the sun to shine, and it’s raining. We want it to rain; and it’s as dry as a bone. We map out how we’d like our day to go, and it goes the exact opposite. We dream of how we want those around us to be; and they are as they are. Have we “lost control?” We don’t, never did, and never will have control of the world around us.

But, there is one thing that we can have, and that is control of ourselves. Such is only possible through the empowerment of Jesus Christ. He was in a world that was contrary to His desire; but He never let that world bend Him out of God’s shape. He stayed under the Father’s control at all times. In the face of a crazy world, He did not become crazy. His emotions were kept in check; His words and actions did not reveal an “out of control” individual. He is the personification of Peace in the midst of the storm.

Don’t expect the world around you to suddenly change. Until Christ is its ruler, it will be a very wild and unruly place to live in. But if the Prince of Peace is the ruler and strength of your heart, you can have His peace in the middle of the chaos.
