God Our Perfecter

Michael Beck

“God is my strength and power: and he maketh my way perfect. He maketh my feet like hinds’ feet: and setteth me upon my high places.” (2 Samuel 22:33,34)

The further we travel with God the deeper His work becomes to make our way perfect.

In the beginning, the Lord cleanses our actions. He wants us to have clean hands. Even as a parent requires right actions of their child, the Lord calls us to do justly. But as we continue in Him, our Perfector seeks to cleanse our thoughts and attitudes. Now it is not only the words of our mouth that He wants to be acceptable in His sight, it is the meditations of our heart. He desires us to be renewed in the spirit of our mind. He requires that we love mercy. And finally, as we move into the higher climbs of our life in Him, He wants to purify our heart, even all our motives.

The Lord’s way is higher than our way. His thoughts are different than ours. Making our way conformable to His and our thoughts one with His takes time. The formation of right attitudes is a long and slow process in which the “candle” of the Lord must search our inward parts. (Prov. 20:27) Such a searchlight is often too much for a babe in Christ, and introduced too early warps one’s proper development. God Himself, by His Spirit, causes us to know how it is we are to walk humbly with Him. Man cannot perfect man.

God is our strength and power. It is He who makes our way completely perfect. He does not overwhelm us. He does not rush us forward. He brings us one step, one issue, at a time into all He wants us to be. He makes our feet like hinds’ feet, enabling us to stand by His power, and finishing in us the good work He began.
