God is Not Kidding

Michael Beck

“Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.” (Galatians 6:7,8)

How seriously do we take God? When He speaks, God expects us to take Him very seriously.

God sent His messengers to Sodom. Lot was warned by the angels to flee the city immediately because it was about to be destroyed. They told him to relay this message to his family members. So, “Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city.” What was their response? “But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law.” (Gen. 19:14) They thought he was joking. “You’re kidding us, right?” And so, when fire and brimstone was raining down upon them, they discovered too late that this was no laughing matter.

Wise men heed God’s message. Scorners despise His warnings. When Hezekiah sent messengers throughout Israel to call the people to repentance, they were met with a scornful response. “So the posts passed from city to city through the country of Ephraim and Manasseh even unto Zebulun: but they laughed them to scorn, and mocked them.” (2 Chron. 30:10)  We reap what we sow: “Scornful men bring a city into a snare: but wise men turn away wrath.” (Proverbs 29:8)

The god of this world blinds the minds of those who believe not. (2 Cor. 4:4) He questions the validity of everything God says. God says, “In the day you eat of the fruit, you will die.” The serpent says, “Nah, you’re not going to die.” Likewise, the apostles warn those who have believed that the wages of sin remains death, but lying devils say, “Don’t believe it, you can continue in sin. Don’t worry. You’ll be okay. The only damning sin is unbelief. As long as you believe Jesus died for your sins, you have nothing to fear.”

Don’t be deceived by any man or devil. God does not speak idle words. He is not kidding. You can afford to take man’s word with a grain of salt. But your life depends on taking God’s Word seriously.

“God is not a man, that he should lie…” (Numbers 23:19)
