Getting Direction

Michael Beck

“And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.” (Hebrews 8:11)

Each of us needs a history with God. We need experience which has worked hope in our life. (Rom. 5:4) Along life’s journey God proves us, and we prove God. A new believer is still “finding their legs” in God. While they live in the Spirit, they need to learn how to walk in the Spirit.

In this New Covenant faith, we can only go so far in giving each other tips on “how to hear from God.” There is only one Mediator between God and man – Jesus Christ. And there is one Spirit who is given to the believer, who teaches us all things, so much so that we don’t need any man to teach us how to abide in Christ. “But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.” (1 John 2:27)

The faith of Christ teaches us to trust the Lord for guidance. All who ask for wisdom, will receive it. (James 1:5) All who seek God diligently will be rewarded. (Heb. 11:6) When we are perplexed about anything, we should not despair. (2 Cor. 4:8) Light will arise in the darkness for those who wait on God. (Ps. 112:4)

There is a difference between being desperate for God’s guidance; and panicked. The new believer is one without experience. They are unaccustomed to a yoke and following the lead of another. They want it “spelled out” exactly how they will hear. But God has no “blueprint” for all to always follow. What He does in one life, or in one circumstance, is not what He does in another.

We each have a unique, unfolding life that God desires to have intimate involvement in. We simply need to trust that He knows how to speak into each of His children’s lives. If we truly want His direction, we will get it. And every time we do, we will be that much more assured that we have a very “hands-on” Father who will never fail to guide us in the way we should go.

“I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.” (Psalm 32:8)
