Becoming Who You’re Not

Michael Beck

“Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.” (Proverbs 31:30)

Man doesn’t want to “become who he is;” he would escape who he is. He would be “someone else.” Why? Because he wants to be more loved, admired, and esteemed than he is. He doesn’t deem himself worthy of such things in his present state, so he must change – he must metamorphosize – becoming something other than he presently is. He must re-create himself.

The spirit of the world invites people to change – to escape who they are – and become who they, and others, consider praiseworthy. But such change is never for the better. The Spirit of God beckons men to receive the gospel in which there is power to become truly better people, who no longer live for the praise of men, but the praise of God.

Reject the world’s message of change. Don’t try and re-create yourself according to the world’s standards. Don’t yearn to be more beautiful, more attractive, more acceptable in the eyes of men. The favor they bestow is deceitful. The beauty they praise is vain.

Thank God for the opportunity to change! Let Christ transform you day by day. He will truly turn you into a more beautiful, more honorable human being, who will win the eternal praise of God. He will make you like Himself.
