When Heaven is Hell

Michael Beck

“My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad.” (Psalm 34:2)

The humble share a glorious fellowship with each other. How sweet to their ears is the sound of amazing grace. They long for the day when ten thousand times ten thousand will throng heaven’s throne and collectively cast their crowns at the feet of the Son whom the Father has highly exalted. They are not interested in men making much of them. They live to declare that their God is great and greatly to be praised.

But the boast of the humble irks the proud. One day they will grudgingly bow their knee and confess that Jesus is Lord, but even then there will be no love lost between them and the King of kings whom God has set upon His holy hill. Still, they will not “kiss the Son.” (Ps. 2:12) Even as they perish they will rage because they remain lovers of their own selves rather than lovers of God.

Heaven is an unbearable place for the proud. The unceasing praises of heaven’s hosts drive them mad. Would you be fit for eternity in the place where God dwells? Then you must be humble enough to receive from Him something to praise Him for. The more you are willing to look to Him, and receive from Him, the more glorious your praise will be. The more self-reliant you are, the more you will gnash your teeth for eternity in that place where God is not. But at least you will not have to hear the maddening singing of His saints for ten thousand years.

Heaven is hell for the proud.
