“Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer. From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy.” (Psalm 61:1-3)
A groundbreaking study on suicides at the Golden Gate Bridge found that a very small percentage (6%) of suicidal people talked down off the bridge actually went on to kill themselves. The researcher behind the study, Dr. Richard Seiden, found that “90 percent of them were having an acute temporary crisis; they passed through it and, coming out the other side, they got on with their lives.”
The worst time to make an important decision is when we are emotionally stressed. Oftentimes we are not even aware that the enemy of our soul has moved in with his lies, taking advantage of our situation and goading us toward a painful and foolhardy end. David experienced many difficult days, but he also knew that today’s “calamity” was temporary. He prayed: “Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast.” (Psalm 57:1)
There are signs on bridges letting desperate people know that there is someone they can talk to who can help them get through their crisis. If you call on Him, God Himself will get you through the worst storm or the darkest night of your life. He will help you live to see tomorrow.
