Unafraid to Ask

Michael Beck

“And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.” (Luke 11:2)

Prayer is very personal. It is an interaction between our soul and God. The same dynamics that work between us and others, can operate between us and God. Think about it: when we would like someone to do something for us and they decline we feel hurt and rejected. Usually, our defense mechanism kicks in and we say, “That’s the last time I’ll ever ask or expect anything from them.”

A fear of rejection can keep us from making supplication to God. We have been traumatized by some previously unanswered prayer. The whisperer who separates chief friends tells us that maybe God doesn’t really care or love us. We don’t pray because we don’t want to be hurt again.

But don’t we give other human beings the right to say no to us? Do we demand that they do whatever we want them to, when we want them to? Does a mother not love her child when she won’t yield to his wishes?

God is a great sovereign who has the right to do as He pleases at all times. His sovereignty does not negate His love. Like a good parent, He says no to one thing and yes to another. Our Father who is in heaven, knows best and has not only our best interests in mind, but what will glorify His own Name in all the earth. He wants us to pray at all times and not to faint. He wants us to hallow His wonderful name as not only all powerful, but all good and all wise.
