The One Rule for a Satisfied Life

Michael Beck

“The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the LORD shall not want any good thing.” (Psalm 34:10)

God is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. He rewards them with every good thing He has stored up for them. He tells us that if we are to find, we must seek Him with our whole heart. Taking hold of the things of God requires zeal. Paul made it his mission in life to apprehend all that Christ had apprehended him for. Whatever had been gain to him no longer mattered. His passionate pursuit to gain the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus his Lord, caused him to count every other thing he ever wanted as loss and dung.

Jesus said He came to give us life in a greater abundance than we have ever known. When it comes to having the things of God in rich abundance there is no other requirement than being a diligent seeker after God. Do you want greater understanding? “… They that seek the LORD understand all things” (Prov. 28:5).

Do you want righteousness? Then hunger and thirst after it and you will be filled. What is it that God wants us to be after? He wants us to want what He wants. What is that? “But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him” (John 4:23). Seek the gain of godliness!

Why do we chase after things that are nothing, while neglecting the pursuit of what is of ultimate worth in the sight of God? No wonder we become down and depressed – that is where chasing after the wind will lead us. “They followed vanity, and became vain …” (2 Kings 17:15). The strongest and most determined men of this world, the “young lions,” often come up empty. The riches they sought after, and had in their possession for a moment, take wings and fly away (Prov. 23:5). But those who have set their sights on things above, on heavenly spiritual treasures that are gained even through the trials of life, will not want any good thing that God has laid up for them.

Make a fervent seeking of God the one rule of your life.
