“Hell and destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied.” (Proverbs 27:20)
Obsession is an undue focus on a certain subject, that cannot “let it go,” and/or is willing to pay any price to have it. The danger of obsession is what lengths it will go to in order to GET what it wants. Obsession can appear to be love, but it is not; it is the lust of the eyes, which cannot be satisfied. And it proves that it is not love, because when it cannot obtain what it wants, it is willing to destroy the very thing it claimed to love. It cannot stand the thought that another might have what it wants.
People who unduly focus on things are said to have OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.) OCD has been designated as an anxiety disorder. One cannot let go of trying to get what they want, because peace for their mind and rest for their soul depends on it. Obsession leads to compulsive behavior, as one is driven to find alleviation of one’s anxiety by the obtaining of a coveted object. But, it is a false belief that peace can be found in getting what we want, because the possession of any thing in this life is both temporary and never as complete as we wish.
We cannot possess any thing entirely, but God. All other things fleetingly stay in our grasp. It is God alone, who has created us for Himself, and has made us to find perfect rest in knowing and having Him. The more fully we have Him in our heart, the more fully we find peace.
“That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.” (Ephesians 3:17-19)
