“Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? curse God, and die.” (Job 2:9)
There is no greater attack upon a saint than a calling into question God’s care for him. Satan knows how to go for the jugular. A person of the world cannot be attacked along these lines. God is nothing to them. But when one who has believed in the goodness of God begins to feel bitterly betrayed there is the deepest hurt and disillusionment. Life that once was full of meaning, lived in the light and warmth of God’s friendship, is now cold and pointless.
After Job’s tragedies, he was in the battle of his life. It was a battle for his very soul. His wife was no help. She herself was reeling with pain and ready to throw in the towel. Drowning people cannot help drowning people. Well intentioned friends can make matters worse. The only hope Job had was hearing directly from God Himself.
The God who made Himself known to Job was a God who was greater than the one He knew before. “I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee” (Job 42:5). Restoration between men takes place when there is repentance. But God will never have anything He needs to repent over. He is not less than we supposed; He is much, much greater. No, it is we who need to repent for believing a slander about an ever good, wise, and loving God. “Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes” (Job 42:6).
God’s character had been called into question by Satan. Job needed to reaffirm his faith in who God was. God’s saints in this day have a greater revelation of God than Job did. The cross is where God has forever proved His love for us. Nothing that can happen to us in this life can negate that love. No matter how bad things may get, nothing can ever separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus.
Be assured: if you curse God, you will die. Don’t let the enemy win. Bless God and live!
