“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.” (John 16:13,14)
What is the job of the Holy Spirit? The Son came to glorify the Father. The Spirit has come to glorify the Son. Jesus said: “If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true” (John 5:31). Likewise, the Spirit of truth does not bear witness of Himself. His assignment is to show us the person of Jesus in all His glory and beauty, and then to locate in our life how we can be like Him.
Being close to Christ is not something we feel; it is something we are. Only the Holy Spirit can produce this conformity in us. He tells us where and how we can put on Christ. He helps us take advantage of every opportunity available to us to learn of Jesus. He is our Teacher and Guide into all truth. His classroom is life itself, with all its various trials and temptations. All that the enemy means for evil, He turns around and brings good out of. The ultimate good in our life is to be conformed to the image of the Son.
The question the Holy Spirit will always answer is: “How can this situation make me more like Jesus?” And as we behold God’s glory revealed to us in the face of Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit will transform us into that same holy image.
