“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7)
A sound mind is a great gift. Without this gift, human beings default to fear and its accompanying torments. The pain of hell is in the never-ending torment of an unsound mind. Oh the horror of being locked forever in one’s own delusions, with others who have their own crazed minds.
When Jesus saves us He restores our soul. The gift of a sound mind comes with the gift of salvation. The Spirit of truth enters us to guide us into all truth and to cleanse and renew our minds. God’s light banishes the darkness we previously entertained. Imaginations and high things are cast down and every thought is brought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.
This is not to say that the enemy of our soul will not try to bring us back into bondage to fear. But when our heart is overwhelmed, the Spirit leads us to the Rock of our salvation. Knowing the love of God in Christ that nothing can separate us from, we cast all our cares upon Him. He is with us, and for us, and in us. We have eternal life. We have good hope through grace. We have everlasting arms underneath us. Perfect love casts out fear. Knowing His truth sets us free from the insidious inroads of dark, depressing thoughts.
There is no hope for a sound mind outside of a walk in the Spirit of Christ. If we are to find rest for our souls, peace in our hearts, and soundness in our minds, we must sit at His feet daily and learn of Him.
