Wells of Compassion

Michael Beck

“There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.” (John 4:7)

There is a well within the heart of the Messiah waiting to pour out on a dry and thirsty land. Need beckoned the heart of Christ. Sheep without a shepherd stirred His bowels of compassion. When all others could think about was their own natural needs, He would say, “My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work” (John 4:34).

If we would do the works that Christ did we must be animated by His Spirit. Where others see nothing, we must see a needy soul. Where others go about their business, we must be about the Father’s business. His heart must beat within us through the Spirit of Christ that is upon us. The issue is not what or how we should minister. God Himself will give us the words to say and the acts to do. What matters is how fully given over we are to God’s concerns.

God loves people, not because of who they are, but because of who He is. He cannot help but care. There is nothing of selfishness in God. His glory, His greatness, His goodness is found in His other-centeredness. Those who love Him, love every soul around them. They’re not looking to get; they’re looking to give. And when a thirsty soul crosses their path, they are primed and ready to offer living water that will refresh and restore that soul.

Christ came in the name of the Father to be the “Fountain of Living Waters.” He anoints His own to carry this miraculous supply to souls that are oblivious to their desperate condition. Let us go into all the world, knowing He is with us and in us to move us with His compassion. From this well of compassion, effective ministry will spring up and pour out.
