When God is Glorified

Michael Beck

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)

The Holy Spirit will not allow us to be caught up with ourselves. He will not even allow us to be caught up with Him. He is in us to glorify Jesus. He does not speak of Himself. As the Son glorified the Father; so the Spirit glorifies the Son.

God is glorified when He is at work. What we think we’re doing for Him can glorify us; but what He does through us will always glorify Him. The only interest of Jesus was to glorify the Father on earth. To that end, He had a work to do and finish. The Father was glorified in the Son through His obedience. And so the Son could only always point to the Father as the source of all He did and said. It was the Father’s works that men saw, and the Father’s doctrine that men heard.

There is no self-consciousness in the service of God. Our left hand doesn’t know what our right hand is doing. We are not watching ourselves work for God. We are not admiring ourselves, and hoping others will recognize our good works. No work we do is good if God is not inspiring it. And if He is doing it, then to God be all the glory.
