What A Friend We Have in Jesus

Michael Beck

“Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.” (John 15:15)

There is nothing like having a really good friend. A friend is someone you can share your heart with; and someone who will share their heart with you. So many people won’t let you get close to them; they don’t want you to know them, and they don’t want to know you. These can be family members who we have a distant, frosty relationship with. A good friend can be closer to us than a brother. “… There is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.” (Prov. 18:24)

The most wonderful benefit of being in Christ is that we have the invitation to draw near to God through Him. God wants His saints to be close to Him. He wants to open up to us, even sharing His secrets with us. The Lord would have us know Him, and He would know us. He would have us pour out our hearts to Him. (Psalm 62:8)

God doesn’t just call us His servants; He calls us His friends because He is ready to divulge the secrets of His heart to us, and He is interested in knowing us inside and out. Are we willing to know and be known by our Lord? Will we simply serve Him as our Master; or will we cherish Him as our Friend?
