Looking Straight Ahead

Michael Beck

“I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.” (Psalm 32:8)

Our path is uniquely our own. We are unwise when we compare ourselves with another. In the day when God will judge the secrets of men’s hearts, we will answer to Him for what we did or didn’t do. There are times when God wants us to be stirred by the example of another, and other times when He says: “What is that to thee? follow thou me.” (John 21:22) All that matters to God is our obedience.

We can spend too much time looking to the left or right, instead of straight forward. Trying to live up to the expectations or the standards of others is a recipe for getting off track with God. Do we believe that our Shepherd knows us by name? Do we believe that He has a custom-tailored path for us to walk? Do we believe we can hear His voice and follow Him in the way we should go? If so, we need to put horse-blinders on and simply be led by our Lord. He goes before us. His reward will not be based upon how well we did in the eyes of men. It will solely be based on how well we heard and obeyed Him.
