“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth …” (John 16:13)
We are not led into all truth by any man. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth. He alone can guide us, step by step, truth by truth, into all that God wants us to see and be established in. He gives us understanding according to the Word of God. “Let my cry come near before thee, O LORD: give me understanding according to thy word.” (Psalm 119:169) He establishes God’s Word in those who are devoted to walking in the fear of God. “Stablish thy word unto thy servant, who is devoted to thy fear.” (Psalm 119:38)
Babes in their anxiety to know and understand the truth gravitate toward teachers who “know their stuff.” They become disciples of flesh and blood and have the tutorship of the Holy Spirit replaced by the doctrines and traditions of men. A lust for knowledge, and the peace and prestige that knowledge brings, should not go before the simple desire to obey God. There is no substitute for obedience.
Let the Holy Spirit patiently unfold the truth of God’s Word to you. Be in a hurry for nothing except to obey God. Knowledge will follow.
