“For the LORD thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God.” (Deuteronomy 4:24)
Our first steps toward God are tentative. We gradually come to understand what God wants. He is an all-consuming fire. He wants all of us.
The act of surrender is one of giving up. Before we “come out with our hands up” we weigh the cost of such a decision. Perhaps we wrestle with what we won’t be able to do anymore. Our “freedom” to “do us” will be relinquished. Or maybe the bigger issue is what we will have to do. We may have to confess to our misdeeds in a way that will bring consequences to us. There is a cost to climbing an altar. A life is lost.
Jesus offered His life on the cross as a sweet smelling savor to God. He is the pattern Son, calling many sons to glory. He gave His all to the Father who is worthy of man’s all. Oh the day it dawns on us that He deserves nothing less from us.
What a glorious exchange takes place! Yes, He gets all of us, but we also get all of Him.
