“… In vain shalt thou use many medicines; for thou shalt not be cured.” (Jeremiah 46:11)
Apart from Jesus Christ, the Great Physician, mankind looks in vain for wholeness of spirit. The therapies, techniques, and strategies they enlist to find peace will always come up short. Why? Because “there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12)
The sages of the world have always advanced cures for the ailments of the human soul. Such was the aim of ancient philosophy. Paul warned the church not to fall for such false “medicine.” “Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.” (Col. 2:8)
Jeremiah asked in his day: “Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?” (Jer. 8:22) There is now a Doctor in the house. Jesus Christ was sent into the world to act as God’s remedy for what ails man. The root cause of dis-ease is his alienation from his Creator. Through the life and death of His Son, God calls sinners to repentance and reconciliation with Him.
To receive the God-sent ministry of His Son is to receive healing and be made whole. Outside of this, men may proclaim, “Peace, peace” to one another, but there is “no peace for the wicked.” (Isa. 57:21) God alone creates the fruit of the lips that can announce peace when the soul of a man has been made right with Him. “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1)
Jesus promised to give us a peace that the world cannot give us. Not a fleeting inner peace that comes and goes; but an everlasting peace, that the world didn’t give, and the world can’t take away. Peace with God is the only peace that really matters. It can only be ours through Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, and the Savior of our soul.
